Next Stop, Singapore : HK Professionals’ Fast Track to Securing Permanent Residency

Contributed by AsiaBC | 04 Apr 2020

Singapore's vibrant city life creates an inviting atmosphere for those seeking permanent residency with AsiaBC's help.

Why More Hongkongers Are Choosing Singapore for Relocation

In recent years, there’s been growing interest among Hongkongers in relocating overseas. While Taiwan has long been a popular choice, Singapore has also emerged as a top destination. Its appeal lies in its cultural similarities to Hong Kong, a comparable work environment, and a well-developed education and healthcare system.

For many in Hong Kong, gaining Permanent Residency (PR) in Singapore is seen as more attainable than citizenship. Foreigners can apply for PR after obtaining a valid work visa and residing in Singapore, making it a realistic path for professionals planning a long-term stay.

Note : Singapore’s immigration system offers both residency and citizenship options, but it does not allow dual citizenship. In contrast, Hong Kong operates a residency-only model. Foreign nationals can apply for PR in Hong Kong after living there continuously for seven years.

Which Singapore PR Pathway is Right for You?

If you’re exploring a move to Singapore, understanding the available visa options is essential – especially if permanent residency is your long-term goal. Below are three key pathways commonly considered by Hongkongers, each with its own eligibility criteria and strategic advantages.

Global Investor Programme (GIP)

Ideal for established entrepreneurs with significant capital and a strong business track record.

To qualify, there are two investment options you can choose :

  • Plan A : Invest SG$2.5 million to start or expand a business in Singapore
  • Plan B : Invest SG$2.5 million in a government-recognised GIP fund

Eligibility :

  • At least 3 years of entrepreneurial experience
  • Company turnover of SG$50 million+ in the most recent year and on average over the past 3 years
  • Minimum 30% shareholding in a private company
  • Business must align with innovation-driven sectors (e.g. tech, biotech, clean energy); traditional sectors like real estate or finance are excluded

*Spouse and unmarried children can apply as dependants.

Work Visas for Professionals & Skilled Workers

A common route to Singapore PR for employed professionals.

Types of work passes :

  • Employment Pass (EP) – For professionals earning SG$3,600+ per month, with recognised qualifications. Most direct route to PR.
  • S Pass – For mid-skilled staff earning SG$2,300+ per month.

PR application considerations :

  • Longer work history and higher salary improve PR approval chances
  • Applicants should ideally be under 50 years old (under 45 for women)
  • Earning SG$6,000+ monthly allows you to apply for Dependant’s Pass or Long Term Visit Pass for family members

EntrePass

Key features :

  • No need for a prior job offer or minimum salary
  • Open to Entrepreneurs, Innovators, or Investors with a recognised track record

Requirements for family pass eligibility :
